Why have stainless steel finishes been so popular across a broad array of uses and sectors for so many years? Euro Steel looks at three different stainless steel finishes and explains why they are so useful.
Three Stainless Steel Finishes And Why We Love Them
Stainless steel is a popular material for many reasons: it is highly resistant to the elements, staving off corrosion and other damage for years. It even has a protective film which makes it self-healing. Its strength and versatility makes it great to use in so many different applications, from jewellery to kitchenware and beyond. You can also add one of three different finishes to create different effects. Let’s take a look at each in turn, and explore its benefits.
1. The Natural Finish
The natural finish – known as 2B – is the natural look of a stainless steel sheet, without and polishing, brushing or other treatments. It is not the most attractive finish, as it has a dull, grey appearance. This finish is perfect for any application that is not visible, where appearance is not a factor. Piping, plant and pharmaceutical equipment, plumbing fixtures and more, will all benefit from a natural finish.
2. The Brushed Finish
A brushed finish – also known as no 4 finish – is distinguished by a distinctive pattern of fine parallel lines across the surface of the sheet. This creates an attractive, textured surface that is great for decorative purposes. It is still relatively dull in appearance and does not have a high level of reflectivity. The only drawback is that the grooves on the surface lessen the steel’s resistance to corrosion. The main benefit here is that the steel can be used in applications where appearance is important. Think catering equipment, back splashes, architecture and automotive design.
3. The Mirror Finish
The mirror finish – also known as BA (Bright Annealed) is steel that has been polished to a high gloss, presenting a bright, reflective surface with a great deal of image clarity. This is ideal for any situation where appearance and improved corrosion protection are factors. Use for kitchen surfaces, mirrors, signage and laboratory or food service environments.
